PHP Developer

We are looking for a PHP Developer who will be responsible for developing and maintaining our internal platform, built on a bespoke MVC framework, ensuring it remains robust, scalable, and efficient.

While this is primarily a backend-focused role, we do not have dedicated frontend developers or designers, so a good understanding of frontend technologies will be beneficial. This is a hybrid role, with flexibility to work remotely, but developers are expected to collaborate in the office a few times a month.

Key task and responsibilities:

  • Develop, maintain, and enhance our platform using PHP and our bespoke MVC framework.
  • Work with REST APIs for data integration and system interoperability.
  • Manage version control using Git, following best practices in branching, merging, and code review.
  • Optimise SQL database queries and ensure data integrity.
  • Implement and maintain frontend elements as needed (basic HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Debug and troubleshoot issues to ensure system stability and performance.
  • Contribute to improving development workflows, coding standards, and best practices.
  • Using Jira and confluence to track, manage and document work.

Requirements:

  • Strong PHP development skills with experience in an MVC framework (bespoke experience is a plus).
  • Proficiency in Git/version control systems.
  • Experience with REST API development and integration.
  • Strong MySQL and PostgreSQL skills, including query optimisation.
  • Experience with agile software methodologies.
  • Understanding and experience of security first programming (running web applications in a hostile environment).
  • Solid understanding of object-oriented programming (OOP) principles.
  • Basic proficiency in frontend technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript).
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively in a hybrid environment.
  • Good problem-solving skills and attention to detail.
  • Familiarity with Docker or other containerisation tools.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines.
  • Knowledge of caching mechanisms like Redis or Memcached.
  • Experience with unit testing and test-driven development (TDD).
  • Understanding of BSD/Linux command line tools.
  • Experience of working with Perl, Python and Golang.
Job Details:
  • Job Type: Full-time
  • Monday to Friday, between the hours of 08:00 to 18:00 (37.5 hrs per week)
  • Location: Eastbourne, United Kingdom (Office based)
  • Salary: £38,000.00

Benefits we can offer you include

  • Company Pension - Salary Exchange
  • 22 days annual leave - increasing by 1 day per year up to a maximum of 27 days
  • Cycle to work scheme
  • Employee discount
  • Enhanced Maternity pay
  • Enhanced Paternity pay
